Abstract

Policy Paper 179 | The Economics of Haredi Households Since the return of the haredi parties to the coalition in 2015, there has also been an average monthly increase of about NIS800 in government stipends, child allowances, and yeshiva budgets per household, but this is negligible compared to the rise in reported earned income . The increase in haredi households’ income was accompanied by an increase in expenditure, which consistently exceeded income—a gap of about NIS 2,600 a month on average . The study found that one out of every six haredi men of prime working age ( 25 – 64 ) works off the books, so actual income is greater than shown in the CBS surveys . Another explanation for the disparity between income and expenditure is that haredi society has a high concentration of young households, which tend to spend more than they earn in the expectation that their income will eventually increase .
